The post that caused this thread (only) to elongate horizontally was probably jLo's original which seemed to have an inordinately long margin.
I can't remember if jLo's post had that long margin ... |

Given that you had the situation you posted, I would say you got the right answer - but surely this is simply a naked triple. I don't think you need to try and find an xy-wing here.
BTW, I haven' ... |

I'm not sure where you had your grid to start with, but an easy way to get it to look good is to format it in Notepad. Make sure it looks OK there.
Then open the posting page on the forum, copy and ... |

There is an x-wing at r2c5, r2c9, r4c5, r4c9. This excludes 6 as a candidate for r2c7. |

You have a hidden pair in your candidates for row 1: 5 and 9 only appear in columns 2 and 3.
Therefore you can eliminate other candidates from r1c2 and r1c3. Once you have done this there is only on ... |

Hi Eddie,
Looking at your candidates in column 4, 4 can only be in rows 1 or 3. Therefore it is not elsewhere in box 2.
Eliminating other 4s in box 2 leaves a naked pair, 78, in row 1 columns 1 and ... |

That's much simpler. Probably if I'd been doing this puzzle from scratch I would have done that before looking for x-wings. But starting from Riderdude's pencilmarked grid the x-wing stood out. |

Hi,
Looking at your grid we can see that the only possibilities for placing a 5 in row 6 are in columns 7 and 8, ie in box 6. So we can remove 5 from all other places in box 6 (including r4c9).

You cannot swap the 4 and 8 otherwise you would have 2 4s in each of box 2 and 6, and 2 8s in each of box 3 and 5.
It is not a UR as each of your cells is in a different box. I'm no expert on URs (a ... |

Daniel,
You can see the combinations 14, 49 and 149. So you have 3 cells with 3 possible values. This tells you that the numbers 1, 4 and 9 must in some order go in these three cells (r5c4, r8c4, r9c ... |

Hi David,
In column 7 there are precisely 2 cells that can contain a 1 or a 5. Every other cell in this column already has a 1 and a 5 in its row. These 2 cells are r2c7 and r5c7. Since we have 2 cel ... |
