 After a single basic move the puzzle is as shown in the diagram below. The pivot for the death blossom is labeled A. The logic is as follows. If A =9 the ALS D = 145. If A=2, B=4, and C=1. In either case, r2c2<>1 and r2c3<>4. I was going to use an ALS-XZ to get the 4 elimination, but I saw that by making it a death blossom, I could also get a 1 elimination.

 I think you were on the better track with an ALS-xz chain. It's just that there are two of them which overlap, except for r8c2.

 Using NL notation:
 r2c3 -4- als:r2c578 -9- als:r8c83 -4- r2c3 ==> r2c3<>4
 r2c2 -1- als:r2c578 -9- als:r8c832 -1- r2c2 ==> r2c2<>1

 [edit: fixed bad case of typos]

				| Good moves Ron. I could argue that 1 move is better than 2, but that is a matter of opinion. Actually the ALS-XZ I was originally looking at was (1459)r2c578 and (249)r8c38, rcd=9. | |
